Q:

What could cause a popping noise in this refrigerator?

A:

The popping noise you're hearing is caused from the freon in the system. This is a very common noise with the refrigerant now being used and is perfectly safe. However, this can be a difficult noise to prevent. There are a couple of things that can be done to try to reduce the sound.

  1. The drier can be bent horizontal as shown in the picture.
  2. Some mastic # M0275547 can be applied to the inlet cap tube at the evaporator.
I strongly recommend having a technician perform both of these repairs. They can be difficult, especially bending the drier. The tubing is very easy to kink and if it does kink, it can turn into a major job to repair. I'm listing a site you can check to have a technician come out. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
