Question and Answers

Q:

How do I remove a stuck water filter from my refrigerator?

A:

The filter must be rotated counter clockwise to release it and remove it. If the filter will not turn, I recommend trying to turn it by carefully using a pair of channel lock pliers. This may free it up so that it will turn and release.

If you still cannot get it out, you may need to call a service technician to release it or replace the filter housing.

I have a similar problem as above, "filter refuseing to come out. Refridgerator Model #596.76602600 Filter #46-9006 I have used, rubber gloves,& then channel locks to try and turn the filter, but all I do is turn it about 3/4 of the way guides, and it freezes up and won't turn anymore. The plastic houseing also turns and the filter holder pops out of the holding fingers. I am concerned about breaking these fingers and then be in worse trouble. Not a lot of room to keep things from torgueing and possibly breaking. Even tryed pushing and or pulling when trying to turn the filter and no luck.

I think sears should send a repair person out free of charge since so many customers are having the same issue with this filter in this model refrigerator

I too could not remove the water filter from my Kenmore Elite Bottom Freezer refrigerator. The filter is in the upper left corner and after dropping open the housing that holds the filter it just would not budge. Well my son soon figured it out and removed the top shelf right beneath it and this allowed the housing and filter to drop ALL the way down and then it was removed easily. Hope this helps someone else because I did not get that info on the phone or website. Best of Luck. And also it did not need to be turned counter clockwise on my model just pull out.

I too did as above with the counterclockwise. That did not work for me. The one that did work was the one where the woman said her son had removed the shelf below the filter and then the housing lowered even more so and it pulled right out no problem.

Thank you Laura for posting. After many failed attempts (and concern about breaking the whole housing), it came right out after removing the top shelf as you suggested.

Thank you for submitting your question. I understand your concern and I will be happy to assist you. If you were experiencing a defrost issue, you'd have ice build p or the freezer would be thawing out. However, I have provided the defrost system testing information in the first image below. If the defrost system test good, then I recommend double checking the damper and vents. To do this feel the air flow out of the damper control (67003903) while the freezer door is open. If the air flow increases, it will indicate the return air vents are blocked. If nothing happens to the air flow, the control damper will probably need to be replaced.  If the freezer and damper are functioning properly, the issue will be with the thermistor (12002355) for the fresh food section and it'll need replacement. The thermistor testing information is provided in the second image below. You can order parts from our Sears Parts Direct web site. I hope this helps. Please reply back to this thread if you require further assistance. Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Dennis, if you're talking about the divider (mullion) between the freezer and refrigerator, it's normal for that to be hot. The mullion remains hot to prevent condensation from forming between the doors and around the unit. The mullion has hot gas lines from the compressor that runs behind the walls of the refrigerator. This is an energy saver feature, to prevent the use of a heater. If the wall gets excessively hot for a long period of time, it can be due to the condenser coils being dirty or the condenser fan motor has either quit running or slowed down. I recommend cleaning the coils and checking on the condenser fan by the compressor. If the condenser fan is faulty, it will make the compressor run more than usual, causing it to over work itself and make the mullion extremely hot. I hope this helps. Please reply back to this thread if you require further assistance.

I am talking about the mullion between the two fridge doors that make the seal when it closes. It is hot about half way up all the time. This unit has sat idle since this problem started. The coils are clean, the fan runs with no noise or problems, compressor is working and the freezer works fine, the damper works open and closes no issues and test pass, air flow in vent is ok, the thermistor for the freezer and fridge test pass. Is the only thing left the control board? Would that make it not cool the fridge by keeping the damper closed?

A:

Dennis, the mullion is not the issue, that's working fine. If the issue is with the board, nothing would be working. If the fresh food section is not cooling that's going to be an issue with the evaporator fan (in the freezer), damper, vent ways, thermistor or gasket. Something is not working right. You didn't state which fan you've checked. There are two, one in the freezer which blows the cool air to the fresh food section and one down by the compressor, which keeps the compressor cool with evap water. Both fan motors should provide a reading of 110 - 115 volts, if they're good. Please reply back with more details.
