Question and Answers

Q:

Why won't my icemaker fill with water after the water to the house was turned off for 2 hours?

A:

When you turn the water off for awhile the icemaker dumps the ice so the icemaker mold is empty. With no water to warm the thermostat in the mold the icemaker will cycle every 10 - 20 minutes. The solenoid coil on the water valve may have been damaged.

Listen for the icemaker motor to start running, then listen closely and see if you hear the solenoid hum when it tries to fill with water. The solenoid will be energized for 6-8 seconds just before the icemaker motor stops running.

If there is no hum you need to replace the water valve on the refrigerator. If you hear a hum the water valve may still be bad, but you likely have a frozen water inlet at the icemaker. Look at the fill tube at the rear of the icemaker, if it is frozen you can thaw it with a hair dryer. Be careful with the hair dryer to not melt any plastic parts.
