I looked at the technical information for this refrigerator. It does not appear that the control boards need to be programmed after a control board replacement on this model. I looked at error codes but I do not see an error code that matches S A 1 or S A 5. I recommend that you have a service technician physically examine the control boards and repair this failure. Here is a link for the Sears Service website: Sears Home Services .

I'm having this same exact problem and this is after a technician came out and after replacing my boards. I have no idea how to repair it.

There is a possibility that a code needs to be entered to program the control boards after replacing them. That code should be listed under the serial number on the sticker inside the refrigerator on the upper right wall. If you see a code such as 0202 then this indicates that you will likely need to go through a routine on the dispenser display to set that code. Reply with the full model number of your refrigerator and that code if you find one there. We will try to assist you further once we receive more information.

Thanks for your swift response. The model number on my Kenmore refrigerator is 596.5009100 and there is no code number listed. Also, when my refrigerator displayed the "S A 1" code on the front display, I turned off the refrigerator via the interface rather than just unplugging it. Now, the the code has the refrigerator stuck on OFF, and I can't even use the water which I could before. Can it be reset in some way?

What was the resolution to this problem? I may be purchasing a secondhand model 59650013100. And I know ahead of time that the control board needs to be replaced. You did this yourself, Anonymous? My husband is a computer guy, and may be able to do this as well. Thanks!

Hello Margaret. The main control board in that model is part number 12639501. That control board will substitute to the new part number 12002330. That type of control board does not appear to need any programming when it is replaced. You can access that control board by UNPLUGGING the refrigerator and removing the lower back access panel that covers the machine compartment. If you need more help, reply with additional details.

Hi, Lyle. We did just successfully replace the control board. Now we have the same problem as the original poster and Anonymous, with the display reading S A 1. I'm scared to do anything until I ask for further info, what steps were taken to remedy, etc. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Q:

I have a Kenmore side by side refrigerator model 596.50019100. What does it mean when it has flashing temperatures?

A:

When you have lights flashing on an electronic control it usually indicates a button is stuck on the touchpad. The control board is receiving 2 or more commands at the same time. It can also be caused by a failed control board.

A technician can run a test with a volt/ohm meter to determine which part is bad. I recommend you get a technician to diagnose and repair the refrigerator.
