Q:

18" dishwasher # 58714439200 wont fill

A:

Thank you for your question.  i am sorry you are having a problem with your Kenmore 587.14439200 Dishwasher.   The circuit diagram for the water fill is shown in the image below.  The circuit consists of the timer, the float switch and the water valve.  Do not overlook the float.  If it is out of position then the dishwasher will not fill.  A no fill problem would normally mean there is no voltage from the timer or the water valve is bad.  Do you have a meter to check continuity of the valve or check voltage to the valve?  I hope this information helps.  You can reply below with any additional details for further assistance.

I fixed it. As I stated I had it connected to the cold water side. When I connected to the the hot side, it worked. Everything is ok. Thanks to all that had input.

The spray arm does mount loose and turns easily but there is a spray arm nut that prevents it from wobbling to much. A simple test is to place similar cups in each corner of the lower and upper rack. Let the unit fill up and wash a minute then check if each cup has a similar amount of water. You can reply with any additional details or questions for further assistance. Poor cleaning can be caused by poor circulation but the water must be hot as well. When the cycle finishes and you open the door there should be some steam and the dishes should be almost to hot to pick up.

I'm getting water everywhere and the water is very hot too. It's just the spray arm is very loose and wobbly. My pots & pans and some utensils aren't always clean. I figure it has something to do with the spray arm being loose. I'm going to try this idea you gave me and see if that helps. Thanks and I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh and how do I get to the nut that may be loose?

A:

The spray tower should unscrew to access the spray arm nut. Water getting everywhere and being hot is a good start to what is needed to clean the dishes.

My hubs has taken the spray arm apart and where the spray arm nut screws onto wobbles quite a bit. Is this normal? He's taken it apart right down to screws numbered 22 on your diagram. Does this whole unit spin or does JUST the spray arm spin?

A:

Just the spray arm spings. I suspect the diffuser, part key 38, is the problem. The bolt on top should not be loose.

From the description you give I suspect the drain impeller is stripped. From the description you give the motor is running but no water is draining out. One trick to try first is to remove the drain hose from under the sink and lower it over a shallow pan and see if water drains out. If no water drains out then there may be something blocking the drain hose. If water drains out then the impeller is likely stripped. The drain impeller is circled in the image below. The motor runs one direction to wash and reverses to drain. If the motor doesn't revers then it indicates a timer problem. If the water seems to circulate in the drain cycle then the timer can be the problem. I hope this helps. You can reply with any additional details or questions for further assistance.

A:

oh I forgot to ask about a wiring diagram I guess that's what I need to test the timer. The timer motor is evidently ok as it goes all the way through the cycles ,it just doesn't drain . The owners manual only has a parts list but no wiring diagram .Thanks

The diagram below may be helpful to you. You can ohm the drain winding on the motor with a meter. As long as the circuit is not open then the motor will likely be okay and the problem is with the timer. Try this first. Checking the timer will require a live voltage check. Check the motor first and remember to turn the power to the dishwasher off first.
