Question and Answers

Q:

Why does my Kenmore model 587.1440590 dishwasher leave 1/2 inch of water in the tub after it finishes the cycle?

A:

The dishwasher will leave a small amount of water in the sump but 1/2 inch of water in the bottom of the tub is to much water left behind.

You can lower the drain hose from under the sink and see how well it drains. If it drains poorly then there is a restriction in the drain line somewhere.

A filter can be clogged or the drain hose has a restriction can be a cause of this problem but the most likely cause of a poor drain is a stripped drain impeller.

If the impeller is stripped then it will not drain all of the water out.

The impeller kit is part number 5300809910 and is available from the following link: Sears PartsDirect .

The impeller is accessed by removing the lower spray arm then the filter body assembly. The image below may help with this.

With spray arm removed and the filter body removed you will have access to the upper impeller. The upper impeller, part key 4, is held on by the part key number 2 a long screw.

Next you will remove the spacer plate, part key number 7, and work your way down to the impeller part key number 11. The impeller has fins on it that will get broken off and cause a poor drain.

I'm not sure of your do-it-yourself abilities but this dishwasher has some age to it and it's getting to a point it might be better to replace than to repair. Some new choices that are economical can be seen by clicking the following link: New Dishwasher Choices .

If you have any other questions then submit another question with any additional details for further assistance with this problem.
