Question and Answers

Q:

My Kenmore Quiet Guard Standard dishwasher stopped working mid cycle and now will not work....

A:

Troubleshooting the dishwasher can be challenging but not as much as having to hand wash the dishes when time is important. I was able to locate a similar question that may help provide some possible answers while you wait for the expert response. I attached the link below along with one for Sears Home Services if you decide to schedule repair. I hope this information helps keep your hands dry.

If there are no lights in the display then most likely the thermal fuse has failed. It can be checked with a meter but it's not very expensive so is a meter is not available then you might give it a try anyway. If you can provide a model number I can provide images and instructions telling how to change the thermal fuse.

Frank and Barb, Thanks so much for the responses. Sorry for the slow reply as the dishwasher repair has fallen on the backburner. Frank, the Model # is 587.14012402. The Serial # is NoTH71737454. Thanks for the model number Andrew. On this particular model there is no thermal fuse so the place to start is the door. If the door switches are bad then there will be no voltage for the display. These can be checked for continuity if a meter is available. The door latch assembly is available from the following link: Door Latch . Remember to turn the power off before making any checks.

Fred, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if there was a thermal fuse for the dishwasher or not since there was no info online (i made the assumption that all dishwashers had a thermal fuse)..... There is no display on the model that I own, just a dial and a "heat dry" switch, which I always have kept off. I assumed that if the door latched close and stopped working mid cycle that the door latch was not the issue.....I don't want to replace the door latch if I do not have to...I will use a meter this afternoon or tonight and see if the latch is working.

Don't overlook the door switches even if the unit stopped mid cycle. Your problem is most likely the timer or the door switch. If there is no power then even the wire nuts connecting the dishwasher to house wiring may be loose. The dishwasher has a circulation wash motor and a drain motor. For both to fail would indicate a problem with the timer, door switch or voltage. Remember to unplug the unit before checking any parts.

@Fred, I received a phone call from my wife telling me that my dishwasher had stopped working. It also is a Kenmore QuiteGaurd Standard. I have checked the breaker and both the disposal and the dishwasher are on the same circuit and the disposal still is functional. The model # is 587.16253402 Serial # TH74261443. I have experience working with meters where could I begin to check? The dishwasher has light on a front display and nothing is lighting up. Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can offer.

The diagram below may be of help to you since you have a meter. I would check the door switches first. If the door switches check okay then the control is likely at fault. I hope this information is helpful to you. Remember to unplug the dishwasher before accessing the door switches to check.
