Q:

Craftsman space heater #583406131: This heater turns on, but within 30 seconds to 1 minute it turns off. I hit reset, and it repeats the problem.

A:

Having this happen to your heater can be frustrating especially now that its winter. While you are waiting on an expert to answer your question, a suggestion I have is to visit Sears Home Services website to set service with a Sears technician. I have attached the link below. Hope this helps!

I'm sorry you are having this problem. This type of problem can be caused by the following:

  • Defective safety control
  • Defective photo cell
  • Dirty photo cell
  • Loose wire connection
  • Improper pump pressure
  • Restricted fuel flow
  • Fuel cap not vented
You can check the photo cell to see if it's dirty and also for a loose wire connection. Be sure the power is disconnected. This can be a very dangerous heater if not working properly. It's also very complex and difficult to diagnose. A technician will be required to make these checks. I'm listing a site you can access, to have a tech come out. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . Thank you for using Manage My Life.

If it turns on and the flame starts and then it shuts down it is the optic photo cell.

I notice you did not say that you cleaned the optic photo cell lens. It has a glass window that will get soot build on it and will shut the unit down if it does not see flame.

If you have then the most likely cause is a bad photo cell and this part is not longer available for purchase.

Please use the thread link to add to the communications if you have more questions.

Thank you for your question.

I have checked for the service manual for the heater but due to the age of it, we no longer have a copy of the manual. I have done some checking on the fuel pressure and it looks like the pressure should be set at 4.0 psi. I have provided you with a chart below show the pressure setting for many models. If you look at the chart, there is not any pressure change from 70,000 btu to 100,000 btu. I hope this is helpful.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.

Hi Mark T, if you look at my chart from Desa who made the heater for Sears it is a little different than yours. I have been running it at 5 psi and it seems to work fine a nice glow to flame not to overpowering just rite, if I put it at 4 psi too low of a flame. Thanks for your input Mike

Q:

What can be causing this space heater model #583406131 to smoke?

A:

Possible gas mixture if it's too rich could be causing it to smoke. From your description of taking the cover off and it works ok can also lead to a air intake (ventilation) problem. I recommend having a technician check and repair this.
