Thank you for your question. I will be happy to assist you with this problem. If it won't stop running when set in the off position, the humidistat # 5216A20001A will need to be replaced. However, unfortunately, this control is no longer available but there does appear to be a suitable replacement at this site listed http://www.partselect.com/PS3527338-LG-5216A20001A-Humidistat.htm?SourceCode=3&SearchTerm=5216A20001A . I hope this will help you.

Q:

Can my 2001 Kenmore dehumidifier model 580.51300 get low on Freon?

A:

A number of different problems besides low Freon could prevent the dehumidifier from extracting moisture from the air. Here are some issues to check:

  • Make sure that the air filter is clean. Lack of air flow through the unit will inhibit water extraction.
  • Clean the front grill to make sure that it is not blocked.
  • Check your settings. Make sure that the Dryness Control knob is set on the maximum setting.
  • If the relative humidity is low in the room that the dehumidifier is operating, it will not extract water.
  • If the ambient temperature is below 65 degrees in the room that the dehumidifier is in, the coils will normally frost up and no water will be extracted.
  • Make sure that the fan is operating properly.
If all of the issues above are okay, then you could have a compressor or Freon charge problem. A technician will need to repair any type of sealed system failure. You can normally have the dehumidifier diagnosed by taking it to a Sears Repair Center or Sears Store. The fee for diagnosis at most locations is about $35. You can receive an estimate for the repair before agreeing to have the unit fixed. A Freon charge may cost about $100 depending on the area that you are in.

Q:

My dehumidifier will not shut off when it is full. What causes this?

A:

The switch you replaced is what should turn the dehumidifier off when the bucket gets full.

If it continues to run without a bucket in place there are several possibilities of where the problem is. The new switch could be bad. The wire harness could be shorted. The control board could be bad.

You can check the switch and the wire harness with an ohm meter. If both the switch and the wiring harness are good the control board is bad.
