Question and Answers

Q:

need a fuel tank and low oil sensor 580326720 Craftsman Deluxe portable generator

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
The oil sensor or pressure switch is part number 77667 and the fuel tank is part number 83311 for the unit. Unfortunately, both parts have been discontinued and are no longer being offered through Sears.
We would recommend running on online search for the part description and part number to see if you can locate either part online. That would be the best option we can recommend. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

Unless there is damage to the tank where the hole is, you should be fine. I replace these pretty often and rarely have any issues getting them to seal. I think I had one in the last year that would not seal. I drained the tank completely and put RTV (fuel safe type) sealant around the hole and on the grommet where it sits against the tank. Then I put the grommet in place and let it sit for a day so the RTV would harden up a bit. Then I connected everything and put fuel back in the tank. As it stands, everything is sealed up just fine.

So what exactly is the brand of this RTV sealant? I tried different types but did not have a new grommet to seal into the opening. This could be the problem

A:

There are several different brands of RTV sealant. Most of the auto parts stores around my part of the world carry the RTV made by LocTite. You can go to any auto parts store and tell them you need RTV sealant that will hold up to gasoline.

Q:

Craftsman Portable Generator. Model #580.326720. Flames coming from exhaust.

A:

There may be an issue with the carburetor causing this. Take the bowl off the carburetor and clean it out good. Make sure to clean out the needle valve and seat on the float. Make sure the float does not have any liquid in it. That would certainly cause the unit to over fuel and back fire like that.

If the generator has been moved around quite a bit recently, it's very possible that the moving caused the float to "bounce" allowing fuel to pass into the head where it will pool up. Normally if that happen you have problems getting it started or problems with it running back as soon as it does start.

I would approach this currently as more of a problem with the carb over fueling at this time.
