A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be happy to help with your refrigerator. Upon researching model 56495493400; unfortunately a refrigerator tech would need to look at the damaged part. We are unable to give an estimate on costs. I recommend getting a chest freezer for your project.  Most chest freezers temperature can range from -20 to 20 degrees. Some have the ability to adjust the thermostat. Q:

Refrigerator Compressor HOT 56495493400

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

The compressor will be hot to the touch depending on the amount of run time. It is not recommended to touch the compressor as skin burns may result.
A couple things to check for are; the condenser coils must be clean to allow air flow through them, this help the sealed system operate properly and keep the compressor from overheating. This will also reduce the energy consumed by the refrigerator.
Also be sure the condenser fan (near the compressor is operating anytime the compressor is running).
During hot summer days the unit will run longer than usual, try to limit door openings and heavy use.
The main thing is making sure there isn't an abundance of lint and debris in the coils. This will cause the unit to work harder than normal, and will add the the electricity cost. If the compressor seems to be running non stop, that could indicate an issue with low refrigerant or a thermostat not regulating the start/stop of the compressor properly.
Hope these suggestions help and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

compressor is EXTREMELY hot to the touch. what should i do? 56495493400 Kenmore Refrigerator

A:

Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com. I regret to hear that you are having issues with your fridge and do understand your frustration. Glad to help out. Im looking at your model number 56495493400 and the compressor will be hot to the touch depending on the amount of run time.  A couple things to check for if there are; the condenser coils must be clean to allow air flow through them, this help the sealed system operate properly and keep the compressor from overheating. Also be sure the condenser fan (near the compressor is operating anytime the compressor is running). During hot summer days the unit will run longer than usual, try to limit door openings and heavy use. It is not recommended to touch the compressor as skin burns may result.   Also this type of problem can be caused by a defective starting device, the compressor itself or a defective fan motor. First, check to see if the fan next to the compressor is running. If this motor fails or turns very slow, the compressor will overheat and stop running. To access this motor, the refrigerator will need to be pulled out far enough to remove the back cover panel. With the panel off, you will be able to see the motor. If the motor is running, I recommend having a technician check it, to determine, if the starting device or compressor has failed. I hope this information helps with your troubleshooting. If you have further questions please resubmit your question for further information.
