Question and Answers

Q:

Difference between turntable stylus and needle?

A:

The stylus is the part the needle fits into and it would be a good idea to try the stylus. The stylus would come with a needle.

See the image below for a typical stylus. The needle is just a needle and would fit into the stylus.

The stylus is not terribly expensive and would be worth a try to resolve this problem.

The needle is just one of 4 parts that make up the stylus.

You can get the needle separate but if the needle was already replaced then I suggest replacing the entire stylus instead of just the needle for this problem.

Q:

Why does my turntable sound distorted?

A:

The needle might be worth another try but if not the needle causing this problem it is likely the electronic board.

The pc board and even turntable motor are no longer available parts. This is an older unit (20+ years) and if not the needle then the unit will need to be taken in for repairs or replaced. If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself then you can have it repaired by a Sears technician. Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations: Sears Home Services .

Replacement might be a better idea. Some of the parts are no longer available and can not be obtained.

Either the needle is bad or the pc board/transister processing the signal is bad.

I hope this information is helpful to you but submit another question with any additional details for further assistance.
