Extension spring 536889252 Craftsman Snow thrower

There are several springs on that snowthrower. I suspect that you are trying to attach one of the 2 tension springs on the frame. Here is a link for the parts diagram page with those 2 springs: Frame Parts. The spring that is Key 107 hooks to the bottom of Key 103 and then is attached to the frame as shown in that parts drawing. The spring that is Key 145 hooks to the bottom of Key 112 and then should also be connected to a punch out likely in the frame.
