In most cases the hole for the spring is very small compared to the one for the linkage. It all depends on the size of the spring in question though.

I will need the model number from the engine in order to see how the linkage is set up on this. Look over the engine and see if you can find that number and then reply back to me here with it and I'll see what I can find out for you.

I was not able to find a complete diagram on how to route the cable. I have provided you with an image that has several picture of the cable. The auger end of the cable connects to a spring on the idler arm. The rest of the pictures should be helpful in routing the cable. If you need further assistance please resubmit your question.
