First the DOE non compliance is only about the energy used by the freezers. The government provides energy standards for appliances just like they require better and better gas mileage for cars. Some appliances earn a "Energy Star" rating which means they use very little power. This style freezer per the DOE uses 25% more energy than allowed. This would not be related to the current non-working problem. I found no current recall for this freezer. Such recalls are usually related to safety concerns. I will search further into the issue tomorrow when there are more people around. The power light and humming you hear most likely means there is voltage. You can touch the compressor to see if it is running. If the compressor is running but the unit is not cooling then the problem will likely be with the sealed system or compressor. I will check further on the non compliance issue tomorrow and let you know what I find.

The Sears service technician came out to inspect my freezer and gave me the bad news. The compressor is locked up and cant be repaired. They don't make repair parts for this model. He said that if it could be repaired, the cost to replace the compressor would be about $200, plus $200 for labor. WOW $400 to repair a $250 item. So my advice to Carl, who experienced a similar problem, is to save yourself the $75 service charge to have someone tell you it can't be fixed. Plan on putting the $75 towards a new freezer. After less than two years of service the thing dies and now I have to buy a new freezer. On top of that I have to pay to have the refrigerant removed and dispose of carcass. It's not like the back in the day when my parents had a freezer that lasted 15 or more years. On a positive note, I do appreciate the quick response from the expert on this site. Thanks Fred M. Not sure if I'll need his help again, as Kenmore won't be my first choice for a replacement freezer or other appliance.

I purchased a Kenmore Chest Freezer model 19702 on 03/05/2011. While on vacation out of state Nov 7th-Nov17th, 2012 my compressor quit. I had approx. $500.00 worth of food in it. You can not buy the freezers anymore, I cannot afford to buy another one or replace all that food. So, I am out $700-$800. I am a single person paying a mortgage, I have an appointment for somebody to check it out but after reading the above comments I am going to cancel the appointment since nothing can be done. It has to be thrown away anyway, after having warm meat, melted popsicles and other items in it, you can use a water hose to be the blood from the meat and the juice from the popsicles out of it, but it still smells. It now sits in my garage because I have no way of getting rid of it, the smell is so bad I poured a bottle of vinegar in it and you can smell the bad smell over the vinegar. I am so upset I do not know what to do. With the economy the way it is, and this being a holiday, of course my turkey was in the freezer, so had to go buy another one.My Christmas Ham was in there, cannot afford to buy another one. I am just dern right MAD and UPSET! I trusted Kenmore as being a good product.

The same exact thing happened to me with the same model 19502. The freezer is less than 2 years old, and it just stopped working, ruining my 60 pounds of grass fed beef and lamb that I had bought from a farmer, while we were on vacation. The green light is on, but the freezer won't run, and every now and then it makes a faint humming noise as if something was unsuccessfully trying to start. It is incredible that so many people who bought this freezer from Sears about two years ago are having the same problem. This is clearly a defect of the product, and I can't believe that Sears is not doing anything about it. It is not normal that dozens of people are complaining about the same issue on freezers 1.5 years old. What am I supposed to do? After I've wasted almost $200 on a freezer and lost over $400 in meat, I still have to pay more money to take the freezer to the landfill, and then buy a new one? I used to buy most of my appliances from Sears, and I thought Kenmore was an okay brand, but after this I won't buy from Sears ever again.

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife.com. I am sorry you are having a problem with the microwave. We do not give out much repair information on microwaves because of the dangers of repairing them. The microwave generates extremely high voltage. The capacitor can store this voltage even when the unit is unplugged. Any repairs to the door or handle could cause leaks in the door. Changing the inside light could cause leaks and many more issues. These are all extremely dangerous. I hope you understand our policy on microwaves. Our number one concern is your safety. It is strongly recommended to have the microwave repaired by a service technician. You can have the microwave repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Just visit SearsHomeServices.com to set service. Prices vary by area so it's best to get the estimate or trip charge through Sears Home Services.

Another option you may consider is purchasing a new one. The price of microwaves has gone down a lot in the last few years. Please click here to view all of the microwaves we offer on Sears.com.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.
