Q:

Spring in Arm & Air Filter 502259281 Craftsman Sears companion lawn tractor

A:

Thank you for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.

I am sorry to hear of the issue you are having with the compression spring and push button on the arm assembly, I know how frustrating that would be.

Unfortunately, it looks like the manufacturer has since discontinued both the compression spring, part number 165x21 and the Handle, part number 91248SE, which subbed from the original of 91248E231. Did it appear the spring was missing? It looks like it would sit between the handle and the grip and put upward pressure on the button. You may find an equivelent spring in a hardware or spring specialty type store. I ran an online search based upon the original part number to see if I could find new old stock in circulation, but didn't see anything.

The air filter is still available for the Briggs engine, part number of 270843S. I have included a blue link below that you may click on to be directed to the PartsDirect page to purchase the filter if desired.

Thank you for your reply and research. I'm super happy I can find an air filter somewhere. I was observing the mechanism and didn't quite get how the spring would work being between the grip and the handle. But it makes since, because the button moved the bottom metal pin, and if a spring was there, I wouldn't think it would move the way it did. I don't see how the spring could have come out of the grip at all since I hadn't ever taken the grip off. Seems like it will be a hard part to find, but I guess I can try.
