Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the mower. If the brake pedal is let out too fast, the mower will jump forward. If you are letting out slow on the pedal and it is doing the same thing I recommend checking the idler arm for the drive. If the arm were binding, it would cause the problem you are having. To check the idler, park the tractor on a level surface and remove the key. Then have someone work the brake pedal while you watch the operation. The idler should move smoothly back and forth. If it seems sticky you and lubricate it with WD-40.

Now let's move to the brake problem. If the mower is not stopping when you push in on the pedal, I recommend adjusting the brake. The instructions for adjusting the brakes are posted in the image below. Once the brakes are adjusted, check the operation.

I hope this is helpful. If you need further assistance on the repair of the mower, please reply below.

A:

Manuals are great to have especially when it come to trouble shooting questions. While you are waiting on an expert to answer your question, I took some time to search Manage My Life website and found your owner's manuals, scroll down to page 31 on your manual and it tells you how to adjust your brakes. I have attached the link below. Hope this helps!

Q:

How can I get the slack out of the steering on my riding mower?

A:

The parts diagram for the steering components is shown in the image below. Check the steering post adapter (Key 18) to make sure that it is tight. If that component is tight then you will likely need to replace the pinion gear (Key 19) and sector assembly (Key 23).

If you need parts, you can order them from the Sears PartsDirect website. The steering post adapter does not appear to be available but the other parts can be ordered.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .
