I did not start this thread, but I need help in this area. I have a mower model 502.255031, and the engine is 143.436012. I need to remove the fuel tank to see the starter motor. It seems the oil fill tube is in the way. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Thank you for posting a question. I should be able to help you with removing the tank. On some models, the dipstick tube has to be removed. To remove the dipstick tube look under the fuel tank for a clip that secures the tube. Remove the bolt for the clip and slide it off the tube. Then unscrew the tube from the engine block. Once it is removed remove the screws securing the tank. Then lift the tank off the engine. Most of the time there is enough hose to set the off to the side. If there is not enough slack you can disconnect the fuel line. Just be careful working around fuel and wipe spills up right away. Please let me know if you need further assistance, on the repair of the mower.

Q:

How do you remove gas tank on 143.436012 to replace starter motor

A:

You can view the parts list diagram of this engine on the Sears PartsDirect website . According to the image, it appears that the gas tank (Key 300) is secured to the blower housing (Key 260) by a single screw (Key 298). Drain the gas tank and remove the fuel line. Remove the screw and lift the tank off of the blower housing.

This may be unique to my particular mower model - 502.255031 - but it appears the oil fill tube must be removed prior to removing the fuel tank. Does this sound correct? I can get the tank loose, but it hits the top of the oil fill tube and will not slide off all the way.

Q:

Why won’t my Craftsman lawn tractor move when in gear?

A:

With the limited information you gave me I suggest you check the belt that goes from the engine pulley to the transaxle and be sure it is on and is tight. Start the engine and see if the belt is turning the pulley on the transaxle. If it is turning the pulley, the problem is inside the transaxle. I have included a set of illustrated instructions (See below). These should step you through the process of making a few initial checks. If you require further assistance please resubmit question with details of the checks you have made. I will be looking forward to helping you again in the near future.
