A:

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your questions about your television. I am so sorry you are having problems with it. I know the TV is a key component in our daily lives and know you want to get it working quickly. In this case I recommend you have this tested and repaired by a qualified technician. Internal components of the TV can retain dangerous high electrical charges even when the TV is disconnected from the power supply.

Here at SearsPartsDirect.com, we love to help you with your home repairs but in this case, for your safety, we recommend you have the TV serviced. If you would like a Sears technician to complete the repair, you can set up service at www.SearsHomeServices.com or by calling 1-800-469-4663.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter. I hope we can help you with any future repairs. Thank you for choosing Sears, we appreciate your business.

Q:

TV Issue with a Toshiba TV

A:

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife.com. I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your TV not working properly. We are here to help. Based on the symptom, I suspect the TV is in text mode. This is a closed caption setting. If there is no text, a black square appears on the TV screen. To fix the problem, set the base cc to off.  This is shown on page 54 of the owners manual. If the cc is off and the problem still exists, I suspect bad solder connections on the inverters. Unless you had training in electronics, I recommend scheduling service. This way the TV will be fixed properly without additional problems. I hope this helps.

If you do not feel comfortable repairing this problem yourself or if it is under warranty, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears Technician. You may visit SearsHomeServices.com and follow the instructions, then click on the red next now button.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Just popped it open with a friend of mine with more electrical experience than me, I saw no bulging capacitors, the solder looked just fine, and the Master & Slave inverters looked fine as well. I did turn closed captioning off, its not a box when I say a black screen, it actually bleeds to black from bottom to top of the screen.

Michael, Another trick I used to do when working on a TV is tap the set. When the problem happens, tap the top of the TV. If the picture comes back for a second, it is usually a cold solder joint. Since there is inverter board is good check the power supply. Also, if the ends of the lamp look burnt, the lamp is going bad. The diagram may help below with troubleshooting.

When I tapped it about 3-5 diff times each time the bleed effect would get a little white in the middle, which vaguely enough while sitting there infront of the TV when it was darkened I started moving menus while it was black and I could see a small bar line that was shifting as I moved back and forth between one menu screen

Michael, A black bar in the picture is an ac leak. That would indicate a capacitor in the power supply is leaking. Unless you find a cold solder joint and a bad capacitor, I suspect you would need a full schematic with the voltages to determine the problem. I provided a link below to get that type of schematic.
