Thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having a problem with the engine. I suspect you have a single cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine. If this is the engine, the valves should be set to between 0.003 and0.005 thousandths.  If the valves are far enough out of adjustment, they will seem really loose. I found a great video showing how to adjust the valves. Click here to watch the video. I hope this is helpful.
