The serial number indicates the date of manufacture. I provided a chart in the image below that shows how to decipher that date code. The third digit is the year of production. The 4th and 5th digits show the numerical week during that year that the laundry center was manufactured.

This should help you determine the age. If you need more help, let us know.

Lyle, My Serial # is W32217047, there is no "B" after the "W". I take this Laundry Center to have been made in 2003 in the 22 week? Is my assumption correct?

A:

Possibly. I can normally use the model number to verify that date but your model number appears to be slightly off. I recommend that you recheck that number. It may have a digit such as 3 between the second 9 and the 7 (417.99370820). For that model number, it would have been produced in the 22nd week of 1993. The year digit does not indicate the decade that it was manufactured. Reply with a revised model number if you need more help.

Lyle, I rechecked the Model & Serial Numbers on Sears Sticker off the top panel and the just inside the dryer door. They are the same as I stated. Does this mean that the year made is 1993?? I think it is newer than that!! Bruce

I don't have information on the exact model 417.9970820. There are many different models that begin with 417.99 . . . I did not find any models that begin with 417.997 . . . Without a model number that I can access information for, I can't tell whether that laundry center was manufactured in 1993 or 2003. If you have an owner's manual for that laundry center, you can check the copyright date of that document to help you narrow down the decade.

Lyle, the Sears sticker on the top panel with the model # & serial #, the date printed on the sticker lists 5/93. I would assume that this was made in 93? The model # & serial numbers are what I found on both the Sears sticker on the top panel & inside the dryer door.

A:

That model number 417.99170820 is good. It looks like you left that digit "1" between the 9 and 7 out in your original details. Since you saw the date of 5/93 on the sticker, the date of manufacture should be 1993.

Lyle, thanks for you help!! This Kenmore Laundry Center is a pain in the butt. We have spent $512.00 into a machine that is 18 years old and the dryer will not work. We have put a new pump in the washer. The washer works fine. Put a new heating element in the dryer tested the fuse/limiter and found to be OK, put it all back together and the dryer will not start. Any suggestions!!! Bruce
