Q:

laundry center model 417.98862891 dryer wonm't turn on but washer will? 41798862891 Kenmore Laundry center

A:

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct.
Upon researching model 417.98862891 I found a couple different things. First with the laundry centers they are one unit but seperate timers for washer and dryer.
If the tub is not turning you will want ot check the belt if it is streched out from usage it can slip when you start the dryer. If you push the start button and the belt doesent turn at all it could be with the start switch or the dryer timer.
If the dryer is turning but not producing heat there are different parts to check. There is an ignitor that will get to a certain tempeture then signal to the gas valve to open. There is also a sensor in the unit.  Being gas it is advised to have gas technician check the gas portion like the burner, valve or coils. If I was repairing myself I would start with least expensive.

A:

Having the owners manual is always handy. I did some research on your model number at looks like this might be around a 1998 model. Your expert will be to help answer your question. It may take 24-48 hours. I do hope that everything works out with the washer.

The felt seal in the front of the dryer may need replacing or perhaps the load was just to large. This can be difficult problem to pin down. From the description you give I suspect the clothes got pinched between the drum and felt seals. This can happen when the seal needs replacing but overloading the dryer can also cause this problem. I know no one ever overloads a dryer but does this happen with every one or just one every so often? Replacing the felt seals is a medium difficulty do-it-yourself problem. If you are interested in such a project let me know and I'll provide more information on how to access the seals.

Ernie, the images below may assist you with this project. Please rememeber to unplug the unit first. There are actually two seals. The upper seal/glides 5303937139 and the lower 5303283286 seal. Replacing both is a good idea. The upper seal/glide kit comes with adhesive to install it. I hope this helps. Good luck.
