Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Kenmore model number 417.80142000.

Make sure the door/lid is closed tightly.

When the dryer will not start there are four items to look at first.

You have the door switch with drum light
You have the door catch/latch
You have the Thermal limiter on the back of the dryer.
You have the starting switch key number 10.

All items can be looked at with a meter for its continuity.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Kenmore Dryer model number 417.780142000.

You can check the  temperature switch with the meter and check to see if it has continuity flowing through.   Also to check are the safe thermostat off the heating element on the back of the dryer.   Key number 33, Check the thermal limiter which is key number 36 on the picture below.

Off of the blower fan housing is a Thermostat electric control that could be the cause also.

If the dryer will not run and there is power the most likely cause of the not running problem is the thermal limiter (thermal fuse) located on the back panel, see 1st image below beneath the top panel. The top panel is hinged in the rear. The front is held down by two clips. Use a putty knife to release the clips and raise the top. The clips are about 2-4 inches from the front corners. The thermal limiter can be checked with a meter if one is available or bypassed is a small piece of insulated wire is available. I can tell you more about this trick if you are interested. The limiter can be obtained from the following link: Thermal Limiter .
