Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I will be more than happy to help with your washer. Upon researching model4174405250; to winterize washer:

Put 1 qt (1 L) of R.V.-type antifreeze in the drum.

Run washer on a Drain & Spin cycle.

Unplug washer or disconnect power.

Shut off both water faucets.

Disconnect water inlet hoses from faucets and drain.

To use washer again:

Flush water pipes. Reconnect water inlet hoses to faucets.

Turn on both water faucets.

Plug in washer or reconnect power.

Run the washer through the Normal/Casual cycle with 1/2 recommended amount of HE detergent for a medium-size load, to clean the washer and remove the antifreeze, if used.

I have done the above each year and it protects the pump and other parts of the washer but my problem is there is a small amount of water inside the water mixing valve and even after using a shop vac on both blowing and suction I am not able to remove all the water so it freezes and breaks the water mixing valve. Is there someway to activate the solenoids to open after I have removed the hoses in order to get the remaining water out of the wm/valve using a shopvac or can I fill the hoses with antifreeze hold them up high and activate the solenoids to get antifreeze to the valve

Thank you Julio but it is not the switch - as I said in the post, we already replaced that and it did not solve the problem. My basic question remains...how do we get the machine to run diagnostics or somehow get an error code when the normal procedure does not engage the diagnostic mode.

Hello Amy. I am sorry to hear about the problems that you are having with your Kenmore washer model 417.44052500.

I suspect that you already have the information that I posted below regarding the diagnostic test program in this washer. Press and hold the START and PAUSE/CANCEL keys both at exactly the same time to view the saved fault code (with the console "awake") as shown in the top of that first image. This should allow you to view the fault code that is likely preventing the washer from starting. I posted the fault code chart in the second image. This may point you in the direction of your failure.

If that does not help, then you can try to start the diagnostic test shown at the bottom of that first image (in smaller print). With the control "awake", position the knob at DRAIN/SPIN. Your details indicate that the lights won't turn off when you press the PAUSE/CANCEL button as show in the second step of that procedure. Try that step one more time. If the lights still won't turn off, then you probably have a bad electronic control board in that console. Replacing that control board may fix your problem.

If you need more help, reply with additional details.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair the washer, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services Washer Repair.
