Thank you for your question. I am sorry you had this problem. You are correct the unit does have shear pins that should shear if the augers come into contact with something hard. If the augers are rusted or if the hard object binds the augers against the shaft the pins may not shear. If this happens, the brass gear will shear. If the gear was made of a harder material, it could cause extensive damage to the shafts, case, housing, and augers. A few things you can do to prevent this from happening is to lube between the augers and shaft once a year and check for ice chunks at the end of the drive before you do that area.
