While the reverse stitch button is pressed, the sewing machine will only sew backwards when stitch pattern 01, 02, 10 or 11 has been selected. The machine will not sew backwards on any other stitch pattern, instead the machine will immediatley lock the stitch and stop sewing automatically.

If you are selecting stitch pattern 01, 02, 10 or 11 and it continues to stop, it could be a faulty electronic control board or possibly a mechanical issue. Since the machine has an electronic control board I highly recommend taking the sewing machine in for proper diagnosing and repair.

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is problems with the sewing machine in getting the error code of E2.
 
Glad to help out.  I’m looking at your Kenmore Sewing Machine model number 385.19110600.

It states that  the E2 is a foot control problem.   Either it isn't connected fully and correctly or it is going bad to where you need to order a new foot control.
