Thank you for your question.  From the description you give I suspect you have a defrost problem.  The ice build up on the rear wall of the freezer indicates the coils are covered with ice because the defrost system has failed.  The defrost system consists of a defrost timer, defrost heater and defrost bi-metal thermostat.

When the unit was turned off the ice melted and this is why the unit appeared to work for awhile.  The ice blocks all air flow to the refrigerator section.

The defrost timer is usually located in the console area in the refrigerator section.

If you wish to check this problem then first access the defrost timer.  Usually there is a small opening with a removable plug to access the timer knob.  The defrost timer knob can be turned with a small screwdriver.  While the refrigerator is running turn the timer knob manually untill the unit clicks of and enters the defrost cycle.  While in the defrost cycle open the freezer door and listen for  snap, crackle and pop sounds indicating the defrost heater is melting the ice.

After about 20-25 minutes the defrost timer should advance out of the defrost cycle.  If you hear nothing then the problem is likely the heater of bi-metal defrost thermostat.

You can also have the problem checked in your home by a Sears technician.  Hear is the link: Sears Home Services Refrigerator Repair

Thank you so much for your quick response. Your explanation and instructions are very clear, easy to understand and follow. I did the test per your instructions and the defrost timer seems to be fine. As you said, the problem is likely with the defrost thermostat. I will try to check that part. Your help is very much appreciated.

I would suggest getting the heater and bi-meatl thermostat and replaceing both since you have to take the rear panel off to access both. You can obtain the parts from the following link with the model number: SearsPartsDirect .
