Question and Answers

Q:

trouble shooting my dishwasher repairs

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

When you go to start the dishwasher, shut the door and then slowly turn the timer until you hear the motor start running and then do not turn it any further or you can pass increment in the timer where the fill contacts close. Once the motor starts, leave the timer knob alone and then wait 1-2 minutes to see if will fill. If it does not fill, it could be a timer failure, safety float switch failure, loose wire connection in the fill circuit or a faulty water inlet valve. You should be able to find the tech sheet with the wiring diagram located under the front of the tub or stuck behind the lower access panel.

It would be very difficult to say with any certainty what part has failed. In order for the dishwasher to fill, the timer must close the fill contacts, the float switch contact must be closed and the water inlet valve must open when voltage is applied to it. The first thing to check is the float and float switch. The safety float is located in the located in the right front corner of the tub. The float itself is located under the float dome. The float switch is located directly under the float but under the tub. If the float is stuck in the up position, the float switch will not be closed in order to complete the voltage to the water inlet valve. The float switch can be disconnected and tested with an Ohm meter for continuity. The water inlet valve can also be tested for Ohm resistance or it can be tested to see if it's getting any voltage during the fill cycle. If the water inlet valve is getting 120 volts and no water is entering, the water inlet valve is faulty or the hot water supply has been shut off under the sink. If the water inlet valve is not getting 120 volts and the float switch is Okay, then I would suspect a possible timer failure.  The best solution is to call for service and have the fill failure diagnosed and repaired.  If you order and install an electrical part and it does not resolve the failure, electrical parts can not be returned. This is why a recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your dishwasher.

NOTE: I do not recommend making any voltage measurements unless you have experience and feel safe and confident in doing so; otherwise I strongly suggest calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your dishwasher.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post.

I know that it can be very difficult to have issues with your dishwasher. On something like this I recommend starting at the drain line under the sink. Pull the drain hose off of the garbage disposer or sink & place it in a bucket or pan. Close & latch the door & put the unit in a drain mode to see if you can get the water to drain out. Other diagnosing will require accessing the motor area & taking voltage readings. If the drain solenoid is receiving voltage you will hear the loud clunk of the plunger pulling in. When you hear the drain solenoid kick in, the water is discharged out of the pump into the collection chamber & then out to the sink. The problem could either be the collection chamber piston/nut is worn & failing or the drain solenoid is not activating. If the drain solenoid is operating & the drain line is clear & the unit is still not draining, you have an internal pump/motor failure or the drain hose is kinked somewhere between the dishwasher & the sink. If the drain solenoid is not engaging you will need to check the voltage to it. I would recommend that you have a technician diagnose and repair this. The testing can be complicated. Q:

I have a Kenmore dishwasher model 36314039000. Can't find manual and it doesn't start, just hums.

A:

You did not mention if the machine fills with water. I will assume it does. These dishwashers have a tendency for the seal inside the water pump to stick. It will keep the wash motor from starting and will hum.

To repair it yourself turn the power off and remove the panels under the door. The wash motor is mounted horizontally and has fiberglass pump housing mounted on one end. Behind the metal flange of the motor is a fan blade. Turn the fan counter clock wise from the pump end until the seal comes loose.

If the dishwasher sets for 2-3 weeks without use it might stick again. With normal use they almost never stick.

A:

Actually it doesn't fill with water at all. Nothing seems to happen except the humming.
