Thank you for your question.

Not having your oven working can be inconvenient.

Because this is a gas appliance there is an inherent danger if not serviced correctly. I recommend that you have a technician service this range.

If you feel comfortable doing your own repair I will give you some instructions on the repair.

  • This could be an either or both components.

  • The ignition for the oven is a resistance hot surface coil that as it heats up to approximately 2200 degrees it then will pass enough current to operate the gas safety valve.

  • It could be that the igniter is a little weak and not passing enough currant through and you tapping the gas shakes it open. These can be checked with a amp meter which usually only a technician will have.

  • Or it could be that the safety valve,if its resistance is weak for the same reason.

  • If cost is an issue I would recommend you replace the igniter first, because of the two, it is the most likely part that has failed. The safety valves have a much lower failure rate, but it is still possible.

  • Since you said that you are tapping the valve I will not need to give you a full instruction on how to get to the components for repair.

REMOVE POWER from the range.

  • Remove the bottom of the oven cavity and remove the flame spreader to locate the igniter.

  • Remove the two screws that secure the igniter to the burner assembly and remove the old igniter and unplug the harness or wire nuts, some parts had a plug, some had open wires with ceramic wire nuts to secure the wires, then replace with the new one.

NOTE! The igniter's are vary fragile so handle with care.

  • If you decide to replace the gas valve, make sure you have turned the gas off first.

  • You will need to access the rear of the range where the gas line comes from the pressure regulator to the safety valve and loosen all the gas connections and install the new one, and doing a bubble leak check to make sure all fittings are tight and no leaks are present. (You can use a dish soap with a little water to do the leak check.)

The part numbers for these parts are as follows: WB13K21 igniter for about $80.00. And the safety valve WB19K31 for about $85.00. and you can order these parts from:Sears Parts Direct .

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

I hope this information will help.

Thank you for using Manage My Life.
