Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The bake igniter is likely too weak to cause the gas valve to open if the bake igniter is glowing red. If the bake igniter is not glowing red, it could have a broken bake igniter, faulty gas valve, thermostat or selector switch. Based on the age (1987) I would replace the range rather that putting any money in it.

I added a link to Sears.com where you can look at all the new gas ranges.

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance as more details become available, please reply to this post

Q:

How can I get my oven door to unlock after the self cleaning cycle?

A:

I must assume the range has shut off and is no longer heating. I must assume you gave it enough time to cool down before you attempted to unlock the door. If the range is too hot the locking mechanism is not going to let you unlock the door. If the lock handle was forced over to the unlocked position before the range has cooled down can cause the handle to bend enough to prevent the handle from moving far enough to unlock the door. Try forcing the handle all the way to the locked position in order to straighten the handle some and then move it back to the unlocked position and see if the door will open.

If you are not able to get the door locking mechanism to unlock I recommend calling a service technician to repair your range. I added some information in the image below.
