Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with the chainsaw. Based on everything you posted in the details the only thing left would be the spark plug. If the spark plug is failing under a load it would have the same symptoms you are having. I recommend replacing the spark plug first. It should be gapped to the specifications in the manual. Once you have the plug installed check the operation. If the saw still fails I recommend removing the muffler and look inside the engine with a flashlight. While you are looking into the engine, slowly pull the starter rope and inspect the piston and cylinder for grooves. If they have grooves in them, that could be the problem. The engine does not have enough compression to run correctly. If this is the case, the piston and cylinder need to be replaced. Depending on the age and condition, it may not be worth repairing the unit. If it were in otherwise good shape, I would repair it. The parts for the saw can be ordered from the following link. Replacement parts for a Craftsman chain saw.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired by a Sears  technician.  Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations:  Sears Home Services.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Rusty, The spark plug should be gapped to 0.025". This is the gap between the center electrode and the bent tip over it. If the plug is new and the cylinder and piston look fine I suspect the problem is the engine is starving for fuel. Next time the engine stalls loosen the fuel cap and retighten it. Then try to start the engine. If the engine will run full speed again for a few minutes, the problem could be the vent in the fuel cap. If the vent is plugged the engine will run until a vacuum is created in the tank and fuel stops flowing. If loosening the cap does not make a difference, try pulling the choke lever out a little when it starts to die. If the engine recovers with the choke out, I recommend cleaning the carburetor. Something is in the carburetor restricting the flow of fuel. If the carburetor is adjustable, you may try turning the high-speed screw out a little. Then check the operation. It may open enough to allow the blockage to pass. If this does not cure the problem, I recommend having a service technician look at it. The problem could be a vacuum leak and they are harder to check.

The spark plug is new and the gap between the electrode and arm didn't appear variable. My saw's model number was on the package at Sears. The engine runs full speed two pulls in arow without removing the cap. Ill try puuling the choke but this is a brand new carb with the factory tune still on it. Im writing to this forum to avoid visits to the service tech.
