A:

I understand that your refrigerator has a bad smell. I have taken some time to research your question here on the Manage My Life website and I noticed that someone else had asked a similar question with a posted response from an expert. I attached a couple of links below. I hope the links that I provided give you some kind of guidance and you are able to fix your problem soon.

thank you and I have already tried all those before posting. The smell is almost like freon. There is nothing left in the refrigerator or freezer (Thank goodness I have 2 refrigerators). I am hoping it's something simple but after looking everywhere it seems to be a compressor or freon leak. I refuse to call a repairman on the weekend so if I get a response over the next few days that would be great.

I am glad you have 2 refrigerators. I see you have already tried most of the things we use to eliminate odors. Freon is odorless and tasteless. Any odor you have is caused from something that was inside the refrigerator. If you clean the interior of the box the odor should be eliminated.

If none of these ideas work, you should get a Sears technician to repair the refrigerator. You can schedule service at [http://services.sears.com/shs/category/repair?sid=MMLxexpertxmerch].

Try unplugging the refrigerator for 48 hours with the door propped open. You will need to remove the food from the refrigerator and freezer.

Remove the shelves and drawers from the refrigerator and from the refrigerator door.

Wash the walls, floor, and ceiling of the refrigerator compartment with a mixture of warm water and hand dishwashing soap. Make the mixture strong with soap. Wipe the soap out with warm water with 1 tablespoon per gallon vanilla extract in it. The vanilla extract will cover the odor until it goes away. Let the water and vanilla extract go into any crack such as around the evaporator cover in the freezer.

When you close the refrigerator and turn it on put 2 saucers or small bowls filled with ground coffee inside the refrigerator. Change the coffee out daily for 3-4 days.

I hope this gets rid of the odor for you.

ok I did all the above and the frig still smells, except the coffee we just started that one. My husband thinks it smells like ammonia. The smell seems to be strongest from the back of the freezer near the vents. There is nothing left in the frig or freezer. I cleaned everything with water and soap, then a vanilla extract mixture. I even vacuumed out the back of the frig (wow lots of dust).

I hope this works for you. It sounds like something has gotten on the evaporator coil and is creating the odor. I would let the refrigerator run 3-4 days with the coffee in it. The coffee will absorb the odor. Cat litter works good also if you have some. The next step might be to remove the evaporator cover, which is the entire back panel in the freezer, and clean the evaporator coil.

I have this same weird smell in mine. Not food. Hard to identify. Like you said, kind of an ammonia or solventy smell. Did the writer ever figure out what the cause was?

Thanks James - But this is not what I'm looking for. I need the diagrams that show the clearance that are needed around the appliance to make sure the french doors will open as far as needed with out hitting an adjacent wall to the right.

I'm not sure what those mean? Is 6F1.0 mean 6'1" for height? If so it doesn't match the specs given on the Kenmore site. Kenmore says 69 3/4" to top of hinge. The width they list is 35 3/4" wide. What I need is the width needed if the unit goes into an opening with a return wall on the right and cabinets to the left. If I leave just 36" the right door will not open to or past 90 degrees, not allowing full access to the fridge. Every other manufacturer gives this information. Kenmore is very vague and this leads to installation issues..
