Question and Answers

Q:

My trimmer began to run only when the choke was left on. If trigger was pulled releasing choke the engine dies. 316795861 Craftsman Gas trimmer/brushcutter

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

The resources we have on this model doesn't provide much for the fuel lines and tank. However, there is usually a fitting and a check valve that would go on the lines. They are not deal breakers if they are not being used, and most new units don't use them.

The issue you're having is more than likely carburetor related. The internal jet or passageways likely have a blockage, which is why it would only run on choke and will bog down and stall when the trigger is pressed. The engine is starving for fuel. A carburetor replacement will be needed. If the fuel lines look old and brittle, I would also order the fuel tank assembly, which will have the fuel lines.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Pawl Removal 316795861 Craftsman Gas trimmer/brushcutter

A:

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

To remove the pawl, remove the spark plug. Make sure the piston is in the down position. Insert one end of rope into the cylinder leaving the other end sticking out a few inches. The rope will keep the crankshaft from rotating while removing the pawl. Use a pair of channel locks and turn the pawl counter-clockwise (CCW) to remove.

I too have this model of trimmer and need the $5 release button. I do not want to buy a $46.93 part to get it! It appears that I will need a P/N 791-160226.
