Depending on the age of the Drill Press it may be a tapered chuck, meaning it's pressed in. Mine is a 1942 Craftsman and thats the way it's set up. I believe they were like that thru the 60's, possibly later.

Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about removing the chuck from your drill press. I can understand wanting to remove the part without damaging it. I will be happy to help you with this.

The chuck simply slides up over the end of the spindle assembly. There is not any kind of locking mechanism to keep it in place because all the load during use should be straight up against it. This prevents the chuck from coming down off the shaft. It is held in place with a slight interference fit. That means the shaft is slightly larger than the inside of the chuck so there is constant tension on the two surfaces when put together. That tension holds everything in place.

To remove the chuck, first lower it to the lowest positon. Then, use a wood or a rubber mallet and tap lightly in a downward motion on the chuck. If the chuck does not seem to move, you can tap it side to side to help work it loose. Be careful not to use too much force or you could damage the spindle assembly or score or bind the area where the chuck mounts.

If you are still not able to remove the chuck, I recommend spraying it with Boeshield. It is a combination of solvents, lubricants and waxes designed to work it way between parts and loosen them.

I have included the link for the chuck in case you need to replace it.
