Q:

Replacing a spring (998375-001) on a Craftsman 3 in Belt Sander

A:

Replacement parts often do not look exactly like the original. I can see how this difference might be a problem. The expert should be able to help sort this out but if you need to take it in to a store for repair, I attached the store locator link below if needed.

It was the correct part! It will cost $59 for Sears to try to put the part on for me. It is better to scrap the sander and buy a new one.

Thank you for your question.

I can understand wanting to replace the spring but have no way to flatten the end of the shaft to keep it in place.

I understand what you are taking about and the repair shops have a squeeze tool that will flatten or flare the end of the shaft.

The only thing that I could suggest is to see if you can fashion solid piece to put the end of the shaft against and then peen the end of the shaft.

I hope this will help.

Thank you for your question.

I can understand wanting the sanding belt to stay on the sander.

I see only one reference to the tracking screw in the manual.

It is the knob just below the front handle and turning this screw clockwise or counter clockwise when the unit is running will track the belt to stay in the middle of the platen.

It appears that maybe the tracking screw is not connected to the front roller which is how it does its tracking. Please check this area against the parts list to make sure all the parts are there and it is connected to the front roller yoke assembly.

I hope this will help.

Thank you for using Manage My Life.
