Question and Answers

Q:

I need to purchase a replacement chuck for a Craftsman 15" drill press, Model 124.34984, that I recently purchased.

A:

Thank you for your question.

I will be happy to assist you. The manual on this unit does not stat what taper is used. You need to know the taper of the shaft that goes into the quill on the drill press and the taper that goes into the chuck. The quill taper is called a Morse taper and the chuck taper is called a Jacobs taper. I posted an image below that contains the information on determining the tapers. Just click on the image to enlarge it. Once enlarged, you can measure the shaft of you drill press to determine if it has a number 3 Jacobs taper. If it does, you can use that chuck without an adapter shaft. If it is different, you will need to find a chuck with that size taper or purchase an adapter shaft also.

To remove the chuck and shaft use the wedge that came with the drill press. Once it is removed, open the chuck all the way. Then open the jaws of a vise so the shaft fits but the chuck rest on the top of the jaws. With a flat punch insert it into the opening chuck and tap it with a hammer. Make sure you support the shaft before you tap on the punch. You do not want it to drop on the floor and nick it.

When you reassemble the chuck and shaft, be sure the tapers are clean and dry. This will prevent them from coming apart.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you for using Manage my life.
