Q:

Problems trying to shift 287707 1255-E1

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for being a valued member.

Unfortunately, without the tractor model number provided, I cannot see any of the specifics of the tractor. The model number you provided shows the Briggs & Stratton engine, but I cannot cross-reference that to the tractor.

I would recommend checking the shifting linkage to the transaxle, and lubricate the shifting lever on the transaxle itself. There could be a bind in the linkage or the lever on the transaxle. If all that checks out, you may be able to add oil, but the transaxle would need to be identified so that you could see what the process is to add/check the fluid level. Some transaxles are sealed and it's not a possibility.

I hope this helps and thanks for using SearsPartsDirect.com. We appreciate your business.

Q:

A lot of white smoke 287707-1255-E1 Briggs&stratton Briggs and stratton engine

A:

Thanks for the inquiry and for using SearsPartsDirect.com.
I agree with your suspicion, a blown head gasket will definitely cause hard start issues, and the white smoke indicates burning oil. The head gasket is the weakest spot on the engine for oil to enter the cylinder, and if it went out completely, it would produce a large amount of white smoke in that vicinity.
For convenience, I have provided a blue link below that you may click on to be directed to Sears Parts to view and purchase the head gasket if needed.
