I suspect this problem is caused by the motor or the element.

You will need a clamp on amp meter to check this problem.

Extreme caution must be used. Be careful when clipping the meter around a wire. The back of the dryer is where the power cord is attached.

When the dryer is running and heating the total amp draw should be approximately 23-25 amps. When just the motor is running then you would see approximately 3-5 amps being drawn.

You say the breaker does not trip right away. This can because the motor is getting hotter and drawing more amps or it may because the element is broken and separates as it gets hotter.

You will have to monitor the amp draw of the dryer.

If the amperes starts at 25 amps but then in a few more minutes it is drawing 29 amps then the motor might be at fault.

An element might separate and hit the heater box causing a direct short.

If the dryer is running and is drawing 28 amps while the dryer is heating but the breaker still trips then the problem might be a weak circuit breaker.

When the dryer is running without the heat, it will not trip the breaker. This leads me to believe that the problem is in the heating element or thermostat. I have removed the heating element and it visually looks fine except for some discoloration at the top due to possible high heat. I checked the resistance of the element and it is 9.2 ohms. I also checked the high limit thermostat and it has a resistance of 0.1 ohms. i checked the amp draw with an amp clamp and with only the motor running, the dryer is using 5.6 amps, with the heater and motor it is using 31.9amps. See the attached pictures of the discoloration. Do you think I should try replacing the heating element?

The elemen ohms out fine but the motor seems a little off. When it is running it should only draw about 4 amps but yours is running at 5.6 amps which is to high. I suspect you will have to replace the motor to fix this problem.

Use extreme caution but what is the voltage reading at the terminal block. Check each leg to the center white neutral and then check from leg to leg. Only try this if you are comfortable using the meter. Normally the motor would draw about 4 amps and the element would draw about 21-21 amps for a total of about 25-27 amps. If yours is pulling 31.9 and both the motor and element are new then check the voltage while under load. Each leg should be 120 volts and across should be 240 volts. If the voltage is lower then the amps will be higher.

The total voltage while running is 234volts. Each leg checked at 119v and 117v. Using Ohm's law, I calculate that the heating element will draw 25.4 amps at 234 vac with 9.2 ohm's. The higher the voltage or lower the resistance (of the heating element), the higher the amp draw will be. The motor is rated at 5.9amps and running at 5.4 -5.6amps. I am starting to believe this dryer should be ran at 220vac instead of the 240vac stated. I replaced the 30amp breaker and so far it has not tripped again. Again, I am starting to believe that it has always been running at the capacity of the breaker and the breaker finally weakened enough to trip. My research has found that a breaker will trip easier each time it is tripped. Today when I checked the amp's, I read 5.4 amp's without heat and right at 30A when the heat is first switched on and after running for a while, 28.5A. Not sure where to go from here or if I even need to go further as long as the breaker holds.
