Q:

Frost built up in my upright. 2539284213 Kenmore Upright freezer

A:

Hello glad to help.  Thank You for choosing Sears PartsDirect.com

I am sorry and do understand your frustration when there is problems with the freezer.

Glad to help out.   Im  looking at your Kenmore Upright freezer model number 2539284213.

From the description you give I suspect the defrost system is not working. When the defrost system fails it is not an immediate failure. Most times the problem is noted till a week or so later when the ice has built up on the freezer panel. By then it can cover the entire freezer coil and block all airflow to the refrigerator section. Some people notice the lack of cooling in the refrigerator section first before noticing the ice build up in the freezer.

The defrost system consist of three parts. The control board, defrost heater and defrost thermostat.

Once in defrost listen to the freezer section for a sizzle and pop from the element melting the frost. If you hear nothing then most likely the element and defrost thermostat need to be replaced. Both at the same time is the best policy.

If the element works then likely the control is not working and is the cause of the ice build up.

Q:

Replacing defrost timer? 2539284213 Kenmore Upright freezer

A:

I've answered my own question: It's in back of the freezer, to the left of the compressor. Luckily, easy to access without having to pull the interior apart.

Thank you for choosing Sears Parts Direct. I can certainly assist you in locating the instructions to replace the defrost thermostat for your freezer.

The defrost timer on this freezer will be located behind the unit next to the compressor. Turn the dial slowly until it makes a loud click and the unit will stop running. It will now be in the defrost cycle. After a few minutes if you can hear the popping or sizzling sound, it will mean the heating element is working. In this case, the timer # 216744400 will need to be replaced. If nothing happens the problem will be with either the heating element # 216730700 or the defrost thermostat # 297216600. In this case, I would recommend replacing both parts at the same time.

Let me know if this helps.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Thank you for your question. Have a great day.
