Question and Answers

Hi. My freezer isn't as cold as it used to be. Ice cream is soft. We just moved and the freezer worked fine before moving. 2538193614 Kenmore Chest freezer

Thanks for the information about your freezer model 253.8193614; sorry you are experiencing a problem, I will be glad to assist you.Moving this freezer should not affect its operation, if the move was properly done and if the freezer was in good condition before the move.  The location could affect the freezer, be sure it has adequate air flow all around it and there is no heat load in the area like sunlight shinning on the freezer, it should not be subjected to a hot climate. Sometimes this issue can be overcome by adjusting the temperature setting.  If the unit is freezing we know the compressor is running so that would leave a sealed system problem like loss of refrigerant, internal movement of sediment could have caused a restriction as well. These is issues would have to be determined by a certified refrigerant technician.  I hope this helps you if you need more helps reply with more details and I will be happy to respond. If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link: Sears Home Services.Ron H.

Thawing food in the freezer would be upsetting.

One cause for the compressor to keep running is that the freezer is too empty and it can't get an accurate temperature, or the room temperature is high, so the freezer is trying to work against it.

Also, ambient temperature can affect the run time of the compressor in most freezers. If the freezer is in a hot garage or outside, the summer temperatures can affect its cooling performance.

In newer models, the compressor is smaller and is designed to run as much as 80 per cent of the time depending on the particular model

Since the compressor is running, the problem will probably be in the seal system or with the compressor. It could be a low charge, a restriction or the compressor may not be pumping properly. These are checks a technician will be required to make.

The thermostat being out of calibration can cause this issue. If you would like to check for parts pricing, click here; Sears Parts Direct .

Repairing this type of failure may not be economically feasible if a component on the compressor is bad or you have a locked up compressor. Even the thermostat runs $66.

Repair manuals are not usually available to the public. They are reserved for the technician. I did check for this model and it does appear to only be available through a technician. Any appliance with a refrigerant is regulated as far as system repair.

I recommend having a qualified technician diagnose. You can schedule that here; Sears Home Services .
