Freezer not staying cold

A:

It can be a real nightmare when your refrigerator fails to cool properly. I did some research and provided a link to a similar question and answer on our site. I hope this will shed a little more light on the issue until the Expert responds to your question in more detail within 24 to 48 hours.

Thank you for your question. The information you have received is very good. If there is a thick frost buildup on the back wall in the freezer, it will indicate a problem with the defrost system and it will cause the unit to stop cooling. Now, if there is no frost and if both the compressor and fan are running, this will lead to a sealed system problem. A technician will be required to make this type of check and repair. I'm listing a site you can access, to have a tech come out. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and I will be glad to assist you further.

Thanks Julio and Scott. There is no frost build up. Is the drain tube not likely to be a problem, either clogged or frozen? My finances are very limited, but it sounds like this is not something I can fix. If you have other ideas, that would be great. Thanks again.

Mark, the drain tube will not cause the unit to stop cooling. Make sure the light is turning off, when the door is closed and the fan motor inside the freezer is running. If both of these checks are ok and if the compressor is running, it will lead to a sealed system problem.

Appears there was a freon leak. Ice built up on the copper tube into the evaporator coil, but no frost on the evaporator itself. I was told the evaporator would have to be replaced at about $800+. So it looks like time to find a new refrigerator. Everything else is working. Seems like a waste. Thanks again for your help.

Q:

How does the water valve connect to the ice maker on my Kenmore refrigerator?

A:

There should be a ΒΌ inch plastic hose that connects to the water valve with a plastic nut. That hose runs from the water valve to the fill tube for the icemaker on the back of the refrigerator. If you do not see it, you can order the parts; water line 5308010366, nut 218731600, from www.sears.com
