Q:

I have a 32 year old Kenmore through the wall unit air conditioner #2537797110. The unit turns on and the fan blows air, but when I set it to cool, I do not

A:

It is always great to hear when a Kenmore product has been working for 32 years. I am providing a few links on troubleshooting on other air conditioners which may help while waiting for an expert response.

If the compressor doesn't run then it won't cool. Compressor problems tend to be simple like a start relay, capacitor or switch or major like a compressor being bad. The windings of the compresor can be checked if a meter is available. You can access the compressor by removing the front panel and unplugging the unit. The base should slide out but after 32 years it may appear stuck. The fan turns so there is power. Listen for a click or hum from the compressor. Id you hear this then at lesst the compressor is getting power. Only a technician would have the tools to fully check the compressor and pin the problem down. You can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services . Due to the age of the unit not all parts will be available though some might be substituted. You might want to consider going online and checking out replacements. You can reply with any additional details for further assistance.
