Thank you for your question. With the freezer section operating at 13 degrees, that is definitely out of the normal temperature range. The normal freezer section temperature range is between 0 and 8 degrees.

To answer your question about the defrost time. For every 8 hours of compressor run time, the defrost heater should run for 21 minutes. If the temperature is never rising above 13 degrees I would make sure that the vents are unobstructed and the doors are always kept closed. Given the age, there may be a problem with the sealed refrigerant system. I would strongly advise having that checked by a technician as any refrigerant servicing has to be done by an EPA licensed tech.

Since it is a new thermometer that was installed, if you have another that you know is working, you can place them both in the freezer side by side just to be sure the newest is not out of calibration which sometimes happens.
