Question and Answers

Why won't the freezer work in my Kenmore refrigerator?

Several different problems could prevent your freezer from cooling properly. A problem with a door seal on the freezer or refrigerator could be allowing cold air to escape. A door gasket problem could also cause excessive frost that could inhibit proper cooling. You could have a thermostat problem or an automatic defrost system problem that is preventing your freezer from cooling properly. A weak compressor or lack of Freon could also be causing this problem.

Here are some tips that may help:

  • Check the freezer and refrigerator door gaskets for cracks or loose spots. Make sure both doors are closing properly.
  • Turn the cold control to the coldest setting and see if the compressor starts. This could indicate a problem with the thermostat.
  • Check the interior back wall of the freezer for ice or frost. This could indicate a defrost system problem. If you unplug the refrigerator and remove the inside back panel in the freezer, you can carefully defrost the evaporator. If the frost keeps returning, then you could have a defrost timer problem, a failed defrost heater or a bad defrost bi-metal thermostat.
If the compressor is not starting and running properly or you suspect a problem with the sealed Freon cooling system, then you will need a technician to diagnose and repair the refrigerator.
