I can understand your concern about the part you received. Most door rails will usually need to be cut to fit. If you do not have a hack saw, a tin cutter will also work. Both of these tools will be available at any local hardware store. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, a complete model and serial number will be needed and any additional details will be helpful. Thank you for using Manage My Life.

I just purchased a hacksaw. But where to saw? Both ends of the rail have clearly identifiable parts that insert into the frig brackets. If they are sawed off, how do the rails fit into the brackets and remain secured? The new "universal sizes" of the rails don't appear to be the correct solution as an alternate to the former replacement part that were sized appropriately. What do you propose that I do before returning them ... as last resort?

A:

The rail should be the same from end to end. Usually all that needs to be done is to measure the original rail or just place it on the new rail to mark it. Cut the new rail at the mark and the rail supports should fit into it. This is very a common procedure with most rails. If you would like more assistance, please include the complete model and serial number and any additional details will be helpful. I hope this will help you.

Scott, I don't have the original rail - that's why I'm replacing it, I just moved into an apt and the rails of the frig were gone. The model number is an electrolux sku#240331401. When this piece was delivered, the outside packaging indicated that it needed to be cut to the appropriate length with a hacksaw. I've since borrowed a hacksaw but if I cut the edges, as directed, I will be cutting off the edges that are designed to lock into the frig brackets. The model number of the frig is a Kenmore #25361462100. When I ordered these rails (and brackets), I was told they were the exact replacement parts, which is not the case, they are clearly longer than the original rail lengths. Very frustrating. I don't want to cut the rails incorrectly, what do you further suggest? Thanks much.

A:

Thank you for the model number. Unfortunately, most door rails will be like the one you received and will need to be measured and cut. However, checking the parts list on this model shows 2 long rails # 240331404 and one short rail # 240331407. If the rail you need is the longer one, order the one listed here. It may be an exact replacement. These parts are available at the link listed below. I hope this will help you.

I DO NOT need a longer rail, that is the problem, that the rails I received are too long and that these are the only rails available right now and bc of that, I have to cut them. Also, I was told by Sears customer service that I needed to order the rails that I did and received. What I am asking, so as to be crystal clear here is,if I cut them, which clearly I have to do, per the instructions on the outside of the package, I will be will be cutting off the edges that are designed to lock into the frig brackets. Thus, the rails won't be secure in the brackets bc I will have cut off the piece of the rail that provides the lock that locks to the bracket.

I suspect the rail you need is, for one of the longer shelves on the door. In this case, I recommend ordering the rail # 240331404 listed above. This may be the exact replacement you are looking for. It's available at the link listed below. I hope this will help you.
