Thank you for using Manage My Life.  I know it can be difficult to diagnose these problems. If you have verified the filters are clean, the fan motor is working and will function on high, and the room temperature is not too low, then this is most likely the thermostat control.  The humidistat would be the problem if the humidifier kept running.  If it was, then you may need to replace both. You can order the thermostat control at Sears Parts Direct. To replace, remove two screws holding the faceplate.  Remove the knob, and two screws holding humidistat. Removed two wires (push on terminals) . Reverse procedure to install new humidistat. Remove defrost thermostat from suction line, cut wires, install the  new defrost thermostat, strip wires, use wire nuts to connect control. Replace the faceplate.

If further help is needed, please reply.  Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Barbara, thank you very much for the timely and informative answer. Your assumptions about my humidifier are correct AND you anticipated my next question about the installation of the defrost thermostat. I wasn't sure if splicing the wire was the correct way to go but now feel better about doing that based on your direction. Thank you again! As a self described "Mr. Fix It", this ManageMyLife support for Sears products is tremendous and will certainly impact my future buying decisions...great job to whomever came up with this concept.

Q:

What could be wrong with my dehumidifier?

A:

There are 4 main reasons for a dehumidifier to ice:

  1. Ambient temperature below 65 degrees (most common cause)
  2. Low freon charge
  3. Fan motor quits
  4. Dirty filter
The unit may be working normally. I'm sending you some information about how a dehumidifier works and also information from the owner's manual. This condition will not cause the unit to burn up. If you feel there is a problem with the dehumidifier a technician will need to check it.
