Question and Answers

Q:

When I use my water dispenser on my Kenmore side-by-side, water pours from the top of the fridge from the filter. New filter or repair needed?

A:

Hi,

Thanks for contacting ManageMyLife.  I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your appliance.

If the filter is completely installed into the filter head it would seem that a o ring or something internal has happened to the head and this is the reason for the leak.  There would be water in the filter.  But If you still have the old filter I would reinstall it and see if the leak was present then.  If the leak goes away the new filter may be cracked or in some way faulty.   Other than that it would like need a repair.

If you decide to have a Technician check your appliance, call this number to get the service call arranged 1-888-266-6317.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Q:

Kenmore side by side. After 2 months the water filter needs replacing. This is the 3rd filter I have replaced in the last 6 months

A:

Water filters should last for one year. There should be reset button to to push when you change the filter. Hold the filter status button for 5 seconds.

A:

The filter should last 6 to 9 months and will normally filter about 400 gallons of water. If you are using that much water (400 gallons) through the dispenser within 2 months then you will likely need to continue changing the filter that often. If you are obviously not using that much water within a couple of months then you can reset the filter light and continue to use the filter for about 6 to 9 months. If flow through the dispenser decreases then I recommend changing the filter.

There is a filter bypass plug that you can install in the housing instead of replacing the filter. The filter bypass should have come with the paperwork for your refrigerator. If you cannot find the filter bypass, you can order a new one from the Sears PartsDirect website. The part number for the bypass is 241944302.

Q:

Why do I only get crushed ice from the dispenser?

A:

There is a solenoid (# 45) next to the auger motor that has to open a gate (# 13) to get cubed ice. Sometimes this solenoid will freeze up and get stuck. It could also be a voltage problem and sometimes the rod (# 46) that connects the solenoid to the gate will get bent and bind it. A quick check to see if the gate and rod work is, to pull the bucket out and manually work the rod up and down. It should work easily and the gate should open and close. With the bucket out, you can see where the rod fits in the back, this is where the solenoid is located. You can try to move the solenoid up and down now also. First disconnect power to the unit. If you can't move the solenoid, it will be frozen in place, causing the problem. If it does move up and down, the problem could be that no voltage is getting to it. Some voltage checks will need to be made and a technician may be needed. If you need more assistance, you can resubmit your question with more details.
