Q:

Ice maker for side by side 253.54663405

A:

Thank you for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com. I understand how frustrating it can be when the ice maker does not work. Based on your symptoms, it sounds like you may have to replace your water valve. When you said "ice bucket was over flowing" I assume you mean the ice molder and not the bucket where the ice is stored after it is made. If you have an ohm meter and are comfortable with using it, you can test your valve. The normal reading for the valve should be between 200 and 500 ohms.
SAFETY NOTICE: Be sure to disconnect power and turn off the water to the appliance before performing any repairs. If you are not comfortable with doing any voltage checks that might be recommended, please contact your local service provider for repairs. Be aware that there could be sharp edges inside the appliance that could cause cuts or other injuries to yourself or others.
If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services

Thank you for the quick reply. However, you assumed wrong. It was the bucket where the ice is stored that was over flowing. Would that change your diagnosis any? Thanks Dave R

Hello Dave, and welcome back to SearsPartsDirect.com! If the bucket is overfilling with ice that has been made, you may have a problem with the sensors. Ensure that the freezer is not overloaded and that the sensors are able to "see" and communicate with each other. If the sensors pass the test, the ice maker may need testing as well. Please see the image below on how to test the sensor and ice maker in your freezer. If you are viewing this response on Sears PartsDirect and are unable to view the image, copy and paste the following web address to a seperate internet browser:

Hello Dave and welcome back! I apologize, I must have been looking at the incorrect model number when I sent you the above information. Your ice maker has a shut off arm that senses when the ice bin is full. Try turning the ice maker off by locking the arm in the up position. If the ice maker continues to make ice, it indicates that a switch or lever has malfunctioned inside the ice maker. At that point, I would recommend a new ice maker as it is more cost effective than purchasing the switches and arm. Good Morning Lokelani, I checked the 3 water valves, starting with the main inlet valve I measured 284, 283, and 195 ohms. I assume the one that measured 195 ohms is the valve for the ice maker and is bad since it is below the 200 ohms minimum. Thanks Dave

If the freezer is working normally and the refrigerator is warm, there might be a problem with the airflow into the refrigerator.

Be sure you don't have food blocking the airflow into the refrigerator. Check the return air duct from the refrigerator to the freezer for blockage.

Look at the evaporator cover on the rear wall of the freezer to see if it is frosted over.

If you want to troubleshoot the refrigerator reply on this thread with details of what you find and I will be glad to help.
