Thank You for choosing SearsPartsDirect.com. I understand how frustrating it can be to not have a properly working ice maker. Based on what you're describing with the ice maker noise. It seems that the complete ice maker has to be replaced. First, please ensure that the noise is coming directly from the ice maker and not another part of the refrigerator. When you hear the noise again, open the freezer door and listen to where it's coming from. If the noise is coming from elsewhere, please let me know.
I have included a link to our PartsDirect page where you can purchase the part you need to complete your repair. Just click the blue link below to be taken to the page.

Q:

Babyproofing a refrigerator with ice and water dispenser

A:

Good morning.... This is a great preventative question. And you've asked with plenty of time to implement... Most units will have a locking system for just such a reason. Review your owner's manual and look for instructions on this feature. Also, an expert will be getting back to you with a more detailed answer within the next two business days if not sooner. I hope this helps and have a nice week end.

I understand your concern with wanting to babyproof the dispensers on your refrigerator. I see Henry provided you with some great information. I'm happy to help you today. Page 14 of your owner's manual indicates holding down the Lock touch pad for 3-5 seconds will lock the dispenser to prevent unwanted use.

Thank you for your question. I know it can be disappointing when the ice dispenser doesn't work properly. Depending on the model, some bucket assemblies have a cube solenoid that opens a gate for cubed ice. If this solenoid fails or does not get energized, only crushed ice will be dispensed.

Some other models reverse the direction of the motor for cubed and crushed ice. In this case, the problem could be with the motor or control board. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and please include the complete model and serial number and I will be glad to assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website: Sears Home Services .

Charles, thank you for the model and serial number. This model has the solenoid that operates an arm that will open a gate for cubed ice. If you can hear a humming sound from behind the bucket, when the actuator is pressed, it will indicate the solenoid is being energized but not lifting the arm. In this case, the solenoid # 241675701 would need to be replaced. Another check you can make will be to, remove the bucket, so you will have access to the plunger in the solenoid. Lift the plunger manually, it should move up and down freely. If it's hard to move, the solenoid will need to be replaced. If it does move freely and there is no sound, when the actuator is pressed, some voltage checks will need to be made. I would recommend having a technician make these checks. I hope this will help you. If you would like more assistance, I will assist you further.
