Q:

Refrigerator intermittently cools 253447231000

Q:

Popping noises in standalone refrigerator 25344723100 Kenmore Elite Refrigerator

A:

Thank you for your inquiry on your Kenmore Refrigerator, Model: 253.44723100. From reviewing the details on your model, this is a common noise, when the unit goes into a defrost cycle. The noise can be due to the expansion taking place, when the heating element gets hot but it will mainly be from, the ice melting and falling on the hot element. As the ice melts off the evaporator, it falls on the element causing a hissing a popping noise.

Safety Warning: Before beginning the repair, disconnect the direct power supply to the Refrigerator to prevent the risk of injury or any electrical shock.

If you don’t feel comfortable or confident in this repair, then you can have it repaired at home by a sears technician. I have the included a link to the website: Sears Home Services or call 1-800-469-4663.

I hope this answered your question. Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com, and have yourself a wonderful day.

Thanks Gerry 93 for the info that you've provided. What exactly can I do about this? You mention "repair" twice in your post and include info for Sears service. Is there something that I can clean, tighten, seal, etc.? As I mentioned in my first post, we've had this appliance for ~9 years now and this is a new noise. If it's due to the ice melting and falling on the hot element, wouldn't we have heard this before now? Surely it doesn't take 9 years of normal use before the first defrost cycle? Please help me understand: #1 why all of a sudden after 9 years and, #2 what can I do about this? Thanking you in advance for your response.
